We’ve upgraded our critical illness cover, for new and existing customers. Without raising costs.
At Guardian, we’re always looking for ways to improve our critical illness cover.
That’s why we’re announcing the biggest cover upgrade yet on our critical illness cover.
Across our adult and children’s cover, we’ve added 5 new definitions, upgraded 24, made 16 neutral wording changes, and rewritten 3 for greater clarity.
The end result is better all-round cover for new and existing customers, at no extra cost.
Summary of Definition Changes

Brand new conditions that we didn’t cover previously.

We’ve improved these existing definitions to make them easier to claim on.

We’ve updated the definition wording to make them easier to understand.

We’ve updated the definition wording to make it clearer when we won’t pay a claim. In a small number of cases, these may mean we won’t pay a claim where we would have previously. These changes don’t apply to existing policyholders.

Cover upgrade promise
Our cover upgrade promise is our promise to policyholders that if we improve our critical illness definitions for new policyholders after their cover has started, we’ll give those improved definitions to them as an existing policyholder.
This means they can claim on any of the definitions listed in their policy terms and conditions, or any improved definitions we subsequently add.
Our cover upgrade promise applies to both new and existing definitions for full and additional payout conditions.
We have reviewed our definitions. You can see below where we have added new, upgraded or made neutral amends to our definitions, or where we have rewritten for greater clarity:

We’ve also removed Surgery Cover from our definitions. Instead, we’ve improved the wording on all the conditions that Surgery Cover covered so that they now all result in a full payout.
It also now means we cover 14 NHS surgery conditions.
WE’VE IMPROVED OUR DEFINTION OF AN ELIGIBLE CHILD
We’ve improved our definition of an eligible child on our Children’s Critical Illness Protection, and we now cover the policyholder and their partner’s natural, step or adopted children and those for whom they’re the legal guardian or have been granted parental responsibility.
So now, new customers can protect children that are part of their blended family, meaning we can cover more children.
COVER UPGRADE PROMISE CHECKER
We’re making it easier for you to keep track of all our cover upgrades. Our new cover upgrade promise checker shows all our critical illness definitions and any changes we’ve made to them since we launched.
